I was invited by Chinese Bites along with 60 other bloggers to try all of Aberdeen Centre’s food court’s food vendors. The idea was crazy because I have ever eaten so much at a food court before but I was excited to see how this event was going to turn out and of course, all the food. The menu looked like a taste of home and I couldn’t believe I tried over 20 differents kinds of food in one night. Out of all of the food courts in Vancouver, Aberdeen Centre’s food court has the most unique options other than the conventional KFC, Nando’s, Opa! and Jugo Juice.
During the event, I got to try six drinks, seven appetizers, 10-12 entrees and five desserts. Yes, that is a lot of food so I decided to give you my top five choices out of the night.
1. Drunken Chicken Hot Pot from Tofu Hotpot
I absolutely loved this. I could taste the drunken chicken and the meat was so soft and tender. In addition to the chicken, the soup and everything in it was perfect for a one person mini hot pot.
2. Bubble Waffle (Original) from Bubble Waffle
I was so impressed with these bubble waffle because they were the closest bubble waffles I’ve ever had in Vancouver to Hong Kong. i didn’t need ice cream or anything to make it pretty because they were airy, soft and crunchy all in one.
3. Pan Fried Chinese Chives with Pork Dumplings from Chef of Dumplings
Keeping it traditional, I really liked how simple and tasty these dumplings were. They could be cooked a little longer for a crunchier skin though.
4. Saboten Set A (Prawn, Pork Tenderloin and Pork Loin)
I didn’t get to try the pork tenderloin or the pork loin, but the shrimp had a very crunchy exterior and meaty interior. The set also comes with rice and miso soup!
5. Baked Pork Chop on Rice from Mambo
Let’s be real everyone. We all go to a food court for filling, cheap and good food. Mambo’s baked pork chop on rice was very satisfying for anyone craving something heavy with rice other than spaghetti.
House Special Mango Coconut Juice with Tapioca, Mango and Pomelo Bits from 8 Juice
Milk Tea with Pearls from Estea Express
Matcha Soy Bean from Strike
Iced Genmaicha from Saboten
Iced Honey Matcha Tea from Teppan Kitchen
Iced Lemon Ribena from Bubble Waffle
I only tried the Ice Lemon Ribena since the other drinks were taken by the other bloggers.
This was pretty much your standard Ribena with iced lemon, but it surprised me when it was actually fizzy instead of just plain water mixed in. During my meal, I kept thinking how this was a pretty good thirst quencher for a food court meal.
Sakura Roll from Aji Hana
Your typical sort of sushi but I liked that it had more shrimp flavours than avocado, which was rare when you’re asking for food court sushi.
Curry Fish Balls from Bubble Waffle
This was going to be on my top list but there was no curry sauce on the fish balls so it was a bit dry. Don’t get me wrong, the flavours were there but it’s just missing the sauce that was mandatory for all curry fish balls in the world.
Hot Sour Noodle from Szechuan House
I wish I could enjoy this because I love spicy food. However, when the spiciness is too high and it numbs my mouth, I absolutely have no comment. Try at your own risk.
Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Deep Fried Squid from Wu Fung Dessert
The chicken wings and squid weren’t too oily and it was just right for me because I’m not a fan of deep fried foods.
Prawn Wontons from Lung Kee
To my surprise, there was an actual shrimp inside but perhaps a bit too much filling to wonton wrap ratio.
Club House Sandwich from Strike
I didn’t get to try these but presentation was pretty appealing.
Popcorn Chicken Nuggets from Yougo Chicken
I’ll give a thumbs up for their chicken meat and flavour but it could use a bit more crunch.
Chicken Bulgogi and Pork Belly from Kitchen Korea
I’ve never had bulgogi chicken or pork before but these were quite savoury in comparison to normal beef bulgogi. After a few bites, you’ll start to taste a hint of spiciness but it was quite delicious overall.
Tuna Egg Rolls from Strike
I’m not sure what to make of this because I could only taste the pepper out of all of the ingredients.
Hainanese Chicken on Rice from Cafe D’Lite Express
By the time we got to the last entrees, I was incredibly stuffed. I did get to try a piece of Hainanese chicken and it was very savoury and juicy. I would only want more chicken than rice the next time.
‘A’ Grade Ribeye Teppan with Egg and Corn from Teppan Kitchen
For some odd reason, our sizzling plate didn’t really sizzle. I saw that the other bloggers had no problem with their teppan but we couldn’t really cook our’s.
Chocolate Banana and Fresh Cream Mini Crepe from Mazazu Crepe
Simple, light and sweet. I liked that it wasn’t too heavy for a dessert since we were all stuffed.
Mini Cream Puffs and Cheesecake from Beard Papa’s
I was never a fan of Beard Papa’s cream puffs after having Beta5. On the brighter side, their cheesecake was very sweet and creamy so I might just get that the next time I walk by Beard Papa’s.
Shaved Ice – A Dream in Eden from Frappe Bliss
By the time I got to the shaved ice, there was barely any ice cream left on the shaved ice. Luckily, the shaved ice was quite sweet and milky and the fruits were so refreshing to conclude a heavy meal.
