The Sandbar Restaurant with Zomato Canada

Ever since Zomato bought Urbanspoon, they have been hosting foodie dining events at restaurants across North America. I was recently invited to The Sandbar Restaurant at Granville Island with other foodies to meet with some of the Zomato staff members.

We were brought into a private room in the restaurant with a long table where foodies got to eat and meet with each other. Shortly after the table was filled, the chef and the manager came to welcome us and introduce us to the food items on our menu. There was a very long menu prepared so I was quite excited.

Believe it or not, this was the first time I’ve ever had a raw oyster. I was never a fan of the fishy smells in raw seafood so I was in for something new at the Zomato dinner.

I added a bit of Tobasco onto my oyster and downed it like a shot. It wasn’t as fishy as it smelled and it was surprisingly quite refreshing. However, I think one is good enough for tonight. Let’s not go crazy tonight.

Ahi Poke

What’s in it: Scallions, toasted sesame seeds, sesame oil, soy and garlic chilli sauce.

With an extremely strong aroma from the sesame oil and sesame seeds, the ahi poke was also another refreshing appetizer before the main.

The flavours were quite Asian-like but it got a bit too salty during my last bite. They could have reduced the amount of sesame oil so I could enjoy the ahi tuna.

Salmon Nigiri

I was glad they specified that they used sockeye salmon. Unlike some salmon nigiri I’ve had, I liked how the salmon wasn’t too slimy or fishy which made it more pleasant to eat and swallow. I’m clearly not a fan of raw seafood.

California Roll and Special Scallop Roll

I would never order the conventional California Rolls but Sandbar’s rolls have real crab meat in them. Given that a roll is around $14, they better use real crab meat!

The flavours were too creamy for me since a lot of mayo was on top of the rolls. If they did use real crab meat, I would prefer to taste the crab instead of the mayo.

Seafood Croquette with Chili Lime Aioli

You know that mushy but incredibly satisfying texture in crabcakes? You can find that in their seafood croquettes.With a crunchy deep fried exterior, I found bits of potatoes and shrimp inside the croquette and a deliciously piquant flavour from the aioli.

Wok Squid

What’s in it: Garlic, Chilis, Onion, Cilantro, and Ginger.

These were very flavourful with the garlic, onion and chilis with a tender and juicy interior. The exterior crunch was also nice to bite into.

Sandbar Tower (Tier 1)

What’s in it: Jumbo prawns, oysters, clams, mussels, crab, lobster, and housemade cocktail sauce.

If you’re going with a big group, you seriously cannot miss the Sandbar Tower. Not only is it perfect for groups, but it really ups the dinner game for the night. However, I feel like the sandbar tower would also be appropriate for two people. The portion is right for a table of four and guaranteed to fill a table of two.

Sandbar Tower (Tier 2)

What’s in it: Jumbo prawns, oysters, clams, mussels, crab, lobster, and housemade cocktail sauce.

Their bottom level had the crab legs, clams and mussels. I didn’t get to try the crab legs since they were all gone before I got to them but their mussels and clams were quite meaty and juicy.

Dragonboat Platter

What’s in it: Fried Oysters, Spicy Green Beans, Wok Squid, and BBQ ribs.

The Dragonboat Platter was basically the hot version of the Sandbar Tower. We already had the spicy green beans and wok squid so there was nothing surprising about those two.

I didn’t get to try the fried oysters since they were also gone before I could grab one. Their BBQ ribs were succulent, juicy and fall of the bone so I was glad that I got try something good on the dragonboat platter.

Assorted Cheese Plate

To finally calm our palettes, we had a large plate of assorted cheeses as our first dessert. Since this was placed at the other end of the table, I only got to try the brie and I was lucky that there were some left over because the brie was strong, cheesy and creamy.

Dessert Platter

What’s in it: Chocolate Truffle Cake, Creme Brulee, Belgian Chocolate Pudding, and White Chocolate Cheesecake.

Trying to get a bite from every dessert was like fighting in the Hunger Games. Luckily, I survived the battle and got a small piece from every dessert on the platter.

My favourite was their Belgian Chocolate Pudding. We all know that chocolate is good but their chocolate pudding is the perfect amount of sweetness and the cream consistency is on point. I would highly recommend ordering this dessert platter at any location, even if it’s just you and a friend.
