MELU Juice and Health Bar

This is a long overdue post since it was buried in a mountain of food photos in my phone. Some of the food items may not be in store right now but regardless, I still think this place is really worth blogging about.

Located in downtown Vancouver, MELU Juice and Health Bar made eating healthy a quick and convenient option for many busy Vancouverites. Like many of us who work nine to five-ish hours, we always find ourselves either eating out or cooking something simple to fill ourselves for the night. I can’t say that I’m a huge health and juicing guru but I was quite surprised with Melu’s menu items. Incorporating fresh and healthy ingredients with herbal therapy, all of their items sounded incredibly clean and healthy. Their variety of juices serve different purposes with some that help with acne problems, weight loss and even your mood. Besides juices, they also have salads, deconstructed meals in a jar and dessert.

Grapefruit Heartbeat: Pineapple, Grapefruit, Beetroot, Lemon and Mint

Benefits: Cleansing and immune boosting.

I’ve never believed in cold pressed juices because I have always enjoyed eating the actual fruit. This is my first time trying cold pressed juice so I was in for something new. All of the juices had all sorts of ingredients in them and it was hard to choose the right juice for me. I would choose one that has an ingredient that I like then put it down because I didn’t like another ingredient. Eventually, I settled down for the Grapefruit Heartbeat since I was pretty neutral with all of the ingredients.

Can’t say I enjoyed it but I also can’t say that I didn’t like it. It was a bit weird to me, having all sorts of fruits, vegetables and herbs, pressed into a clear coloured liquid. I definitely felt healthier and slightly cleansed but the whole concept was odd for me.

The Hulk: Apple, Romaine Lettuce, Jicama, Lemon, Kale, Mint, and Ginger.

Benefits: Weight loss, low cal and immune boosting.

Jacky actually really enjoyed the hulk since it was very “green”. You could really taste the strong mint and ginger flavours with the apple. If anything, he thought this was similar to the Kale juice at Jugo Juice with less sugar.

Melu also does solid foods including salads, chia puddings, and health bars.

Cream of Mushroom Miso with Zucchini Noodles, Kale, Cashew, Tomatoes and Romaine Lettuce

This is the first time I’ve had zucchini noodles and I absolutely loved them. The texture is unique and it would go well with any sauce.

Their cream of mushroom miso was very creamy but I could barely taste the miso. You would think that vegan or healthy food would be light but this was quite filling and delicious.

Salted Pecan Pie: Pecan, Dates, Almonds, Walnuts, Banana, Avocado, Coconut Cream, Cocoa and Pink Salt.

I’m not sure if these are still available but if they are, I would highly recommend them. Being a person who loves heavy, full dairy and sweet desserts, Melu’s health bars weren’t too far from what I would prefer.

Their salted pecan pie was very nutty and I felt healthier when I was done. I could really taste the banana mashed into the health bar and all of the textures in coconut cream and avocado. I can’t say that you could fool someone with this since it obviously tasted very differently from an actual salted pecan pie.

Mangolicious: Mango, walnuts, almond, cashew, coconut, dates and Agave nectar

In comparison to the Salted Pecan Pie, their mangolicious was very tart-like and summery. I found this lighter and more refreshing than the other health bar.
