Cafe de l’Orangerie

I was recommended to try out Cafe de l’Orangerie by Brad Soon after I saw his Instagram photo of their delicious Mentaiko spaghetti. Since I was craving pasta but not exactly the heavy and conventional options, I had to try Cafe de l’Orangerie as soon as possible.

The restaurant is located in a small strip mall in Marpole. I would have never expected that this strip mall would have a hidden gem and even when we got there at 2:30pm on a Sunday, the restaurant was still pretty full. The servers are all Japanese and as usual, Japanese service is always great. We were clearly missing out for a long time.

Masago de Creamy Spaghetti – Squid, Mushroom, Asparagus, Roe, and Cream

Finally, something that isn’t the normal Four Cheese or Alfredo sauce on pasta. I needed a twist on the usual pasta options.

Their masago de creamy was indeed very creamy but it didn’t make me feel too heavy afterwards. Adding masago into the pasta gave it a fishy taste but it was amazing. I really loved this dish because all the ingredients went very well with each other.

Hashed Beef Stew de Creamy Spaghetti and Hamburger Steak

Japanese hamburger steak isn’t the usual Western grilled hamburger steaks. Their version of a hamburger steak is sweeter and rounder with a very moist centre. They almost taste like Ikea meatballs.

I would have never though that cream and beef stew would go well together but it certainly did for this dish. The stew was aromatic and rich while the cream helped tone the flavours down a bit.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Cafe de l’Orangerie and I would definitely come back soon!
